Designed Award Winning Float for PEI Multicultural Council

Recipient of Gorman Award for excellence in performing arts, decorative booth, and food representation at the Heritage Fall Festival. Monica and her students performed three times in one day on September 17, 1990 in front of the Province House and at Confederation of Arts , PEI.

PEI Chinese Canadian Association booth

With very limited resources and shoe string budget, Monica designed, purchased materials and organized setting up the cultural booth for the PEI Chinese Canadian Association. Premier Joe Ghiz and Mayor John Ready visited the booth. Many thanks to her volunteers, Tanya Kun, Helen Lam and Rosemary Archer for attending the booth while she was managing numerous activities simultaneously on September 17,1990.

Monica Designed the Cultural Booth

When her two children aged 7 & 4 went to bed, Monica continued working on her designs on the kitchen floor. As a volunteer, she dedicated her time & creativities to promote cross cultural understandings.

Monica and students performed at Fall Heritage Festival

Monica and her students performed at the Heritage Fall Festival as it was one of the requirements required to be qualified for the Gorman Award. She wore many hats including cultural booth designer, food coordinator, teacher/performer, organizer of the First Chinese Painting Workshop etc., Because of her efforts, the PEI Chinese Canadian Association won the Gorman Award which was presented by the PEI Department of Community and Cultural Affairs.

Besides being the booth designer, food coordinator, Chinese Painting Workshop organizer, Monica also performed a folkdance three times along with her four students in one day.

First Chinese Painting Workshop

David Hu gave a Chinese Painting Workshop for four days at Holland College. Monica made the grant application; she also found an accommodation for David to stay at Charlottetown in 1990. Monica distributed flyers to UPEI Library, Fine Arts Department & student residence, PEI Council of the Arts, Confederation Centre of the Arts, Acadian Society, Guardian Newspaper etc. As always, it was another Volunteer work.

First Chinese Painting Workshop

Monica initiated & organized the First Chinese Painting Workshop for four days at Holland College Charlottetown, PEI, in September 1990. Monica met David Hu in a multicultural festival in Halifax and invited him to demonstrate Chinse calligraphy in the Heritage Fall Festival in Charlottewon.
